Book four in the McGarry Stateside series by Irish author Caimh McDonnell and we're back in the land of crazy thriller right from the outset. I mean just because Dylan desperately needed a toilet, and the one in the RV isn't working, why wouldn't he go in the great outdoors - after all the group are out in the middle of nowhere - heading to their next destination. Only there is no way known Dylan's doing anything like that out in nature, which means a local bar, which of course ends up with a siege surrounded by some very interesting artworks, and some unexpected helpers.

Meanwhile the Sisters of the Saint are up to their own elbows in problems with the same cartel that's been after them for a while now very very pissed off, and willing to show their displeasure with maximum pressure. Which means on both sides of the blown up access road to a small town occupied by a lot of people with some serious attitude problems, there is quite a bit going on.

The blurb for this one includes the line:

McDonnell’s work has been praised for bringing a fresh voice to the thriller genre.

Gotta love the slight understatement in that. Comedic just this side of manic, thrilling just this side of terrifying, crazy just this side of lunacy, love these books, love the whole messed up interwoven series of characters, and really really want some more please.

(Listen to these on audio - the narrator does a brilliant job).

Other Plans

Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.

How much trouble can you possibly get into just stopping to use a restroom?

As it turns out, an awful lot. Bunny and co are supposed to be keeping a low profile, but nature calls and ironically, one of their party has a hard and fast rule about not answering that call while surrounded by nature. This is how they end up in the wrong bar, surrounded by the wrong people at the wrongest of wrong times. The local right-wing militia has a big week planned, and Bunny and the boys have inadvertently crashed the party. Before they know it, they’re in a desperate fight for survival against a bunch of people who refuse to believe they’re not who they think they are.

Meanwhile, the Sisters of the Saint have more than enough troubles of their own. A certain cartel is very angry at them and is pulling out all the stops to make their point. It all adds up to one hell of a tricky few days. But then, as a great man once said life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.
