Anyway, pre-Tinder and like "apps", matrimonial agencies, seemingly run by happily married people took it upon themselves to match single's based on answers to questionnaires, and one assumes, a fair amount of eenie, meenie, miney moe.</p> <p>In LONELYHEART 4122 Mr Arthur Spain is very worried about his recently widowed sister-in-law, who seems to have vanished into thin air, with her normally immaculate doorstep being rapidly cluttered by bottles of curdling milk and piles of unread newspapers. His report to Inspector Purbright of this most concerning occurrence, finds he and Sergeant Love already perplexed by the disappearance of another well to do woman of a similar age. Eventually the hunt for a connection leads the investigation to Handclasp House, a local dating agency managed by a husband and wife team.</p> <p>Meanwhile Miss Teatime has arrived in Flaxborough and made her way to Handclasp House seemingly intent on a match for herself, a woman purporting to be of comfortable means, and not at all interested in accepting the auspices of protection, or the surveillance of the local constabulary.</p> <p>Suffice to say that readers new to this series will soon discover this is more than meets the eye when it comes to Miss Teatime and her presence in Flaxborough isn't quite what Inspector Purbright thinks it is. Old hands will be gently reminded of the sense of fun, and the acute sense of windup that is such a hallmark of this wonderful series.</p> <p> </p> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_15 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://www.austcrimefiction.org/review/lonelyheart-4122-colin-watson" data-a2a-title="Lonelyheart 4122, Colin Watson"><a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.austcrimefiction.org%2Freview%2Flonelyheart-4122-colin-watson&amp;title=Lonelyheart%204122%2C%20Colin%20Watson"></a><a class="a2a_button_facebook"></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"></a><a class="a2a_button_email"></a></span> </div> </div> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--2"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BOOK DETAILS</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-field-book field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><div data-history-node-id="15267" class="row bs-2col node node--type-books node--view-mode-blogged-books"> <div class="col-sm-6 bs-region bs-region--left"> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--22"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BOOK INFORMATION</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-field-book-cover field--type-image field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"> <a href="/book/lonelyheart-4122" hreflang="en"><img src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/book-covers/lonelyheart-4122.jpg?itok=KLnzIsdf" width="144" height="220" alt="Lonelyheart 4122" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </a> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Author</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/author/colin-watson" hreflang="en">Colin Watson</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-isbn field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">ISBN</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item">B07B9MV35J</div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-year-of-publication field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Year of Publication</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1649" hreflang="en">1967</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14" hreflang="en">2018</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-series field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Series</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4365" hreflang="en">Flaxborough Chronicles</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-book-number-in-series- field--type-integer field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Book Number (in series)</div> <div class="field--item">4</div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="col-sm-6 bs-region bs-region--right"> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--23"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BLURB</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p><strong>Whatever can have happened to Lil?</strong></p> <p>Flaxborough butcher Arthur Spain is worried that his sister-in-law hasn’t been in touch lately, so he pays her a visit. Everything about this novel is slightly wacky, very English in humour and stylings, and slyly clever.</p> <p>As you will get from the opening line of the blurb:</p> <blockquote> <p>The gripping sight of four burly policeman manhandling a bath down the front path of a respectable villa isn't one the residents of Flaxborough see every day.</p> </blockquote> <p>One would hope not, else the net curtains subsequently referred to would fray from all the twitching, and neighbours would hyperventilate from all the "making observations to Chief Inspector Purbright and Sergeant Love". Mind you it's not every day they come across a pair quite like nice Mr Gordon Periam, mild-mannered tobacconist, owner of the residence post the death of his mother; and the rather less nice, and therefore infinitely more comment worthy, Mr Brian Hopjoy, traveller, alleged spy and all round cad.</p> <p>It would be too easy to provide spoilers about why the bath, why the interest in the backyard at number 14 Beatrice Avenue, and exactly who has gone missing (which is a matter of some conjecture for quite some time). But suffice to say that by the time a couple of government spooks are on the scene, everything goes a bit too James Bond for Purbright's taste, to say nothing of what it does to his senior officer.</p> <p>As is the case with this series, you do need to remember that this novel was first published in 1962 (going on to win a Silver Dagger from the British CWA), so some of the observations of womanly attributes are more than a bit distasteful in this day and age, and some of the humour pushes the the bounds of political correctness to the point where some readers may find themselves more than a bit startled.</p> <p>Having come to the series sometime in the '70's (luckily as I doubt I'd have snuck it past parental supervision in the early '60s), I've always been utterly beguiled by the wry, witty, slightly lunatic stylings of the novels, and HOPJOY WAS HERE has been a bit of a favourite because the plot is so devilishly clever to boot.</p> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_15 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://www.austcrimefiction.org/review/hopjoy-was-here-colin-watson" data-a2a-title="Hopjoy Was Here, Colin Watson"><a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.austcrimefiction.org%2Freview%2Fhopjoy-was-here-colin-watson&amp;title=Hopjoy%20Was%20Here%2C%20Colin%20Watson"></a><a class="a2a_button_facebook"></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"></a><a class="a2a_button_email"></a></span> </div> </div> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--7"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BOOK DETAILS</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-field-book field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><div data-history-node-id="15212" class="row bs-2col node node--type-books node--view-mode-blogged-books"> <div class="col-sm-6 bs-region bs-region--left"> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--5"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BOOK INFORMATION</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-field-book-cover field--type-image field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"> <a href="/book/hopjoy-was-here" hreflang="en"><img src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/book-covers/hopjoy-was-here.jpg?itok=2FWsa5HO" width="144" height="220" alt="Hopjoy Was Here" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </a> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Author</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/author/colin-watson" hreflang="en">Colin Watson</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-isbn field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">ISBN</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item">9781788420143</div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-year-of-publication field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Year of Publication</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14" hreflang="en">2018</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-series field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Series</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4365" hreflang="en">Flaxborough Chronicles</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-book-number-in-series- field--type-integer field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Book Number (in series)</div> <div class="field--item">3</div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="col-sm-6 bs-region bs-region--right"> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--6"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BLURB</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p><strong>The gripping sight of four burly policeman manhandling a bath down the front path of a respectable villa isn’t one the residents of Flaxborough see every day.</strong></p> <p>Net curtains twitch furiously, and neighbours have observations to make to Chief Inspector Purbright and Sergeant Love about the inhabitants of 14, Beatrice Avenue. a series of monuments explode. Things get a lot more serious though when local "identity" Stan Biggadyke is blown up on the nights he normally spends with Police Chief Hector Larch's wife - the same Inspector Larch who volunteers at the local civil defence centre that is missing boxes of explosives.</p> <p>By this second book Watson had really hit his straps with eccentric characters, elaborate and stagey plots, a lot of mayhem and dollops of gossip, small town characteristics and general craziness.</p> <p>It's a joy to go back to this series, now available in ebook format which is just as well - my precious, much loved paperbacks are starting to show signs of fragility and have had to be tucked away in protective coverings. Those books are staying with me even if I manage to work up the necessary bravery to undertake the increasingly desperately required "grand cull".</p> <p> </p> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_15 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://www.austcrimefiction.org/review/bump-night-colin-watson" data-a2a-title="Bump In the Night, Colin Watson"><a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.austcrimefiction.org%2Freview%2Fbump-night-colin-watson&amp;title=Bump%20In%20the%20Night%2C%20Colin%20Watson"></a><a class="a2a_button_facebook"></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"></a><a class="a2a_button_email"></a></span> </div> </div> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--12"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BOOK DETAILS</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-field-book field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><div data-history-node-id="14878" class="row bs-2col node node--type-books node--view-mode-blogged-books"> <div class="col-sm-6 bs-region bs-region--left"> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--10"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BOOK INFORMATION</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-field-book-cover field--type-image field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"> <a href="/book/bump-night" hreflang="en"><img src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/book-covers/bump-night.jpg?itok=wsbWUnVK" width="143" height="220" alt="Bump in the Night" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </a> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Author</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/author/colin-watson" hreflang="en">Colin Watson</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-isbn field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">ISBN</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item">9781788420143</div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-year-of-publication field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Year of Publication</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14" hreflang="en">2018</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-series field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Series</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4365" hreflang="en">Flaxborough Chronicles</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-book-number-in-series- field--type-integer field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Book Number (in series)</div> <div class="field--item">2</div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="col-sm-6 bs-region bs-region--right"> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--11"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BLURB</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Tuesday nights have suddenly turned quite ridiculously noisy in the country town of Chalmsbury, where the good folk are outraged at having their rest disturbed.</p> <p>It begins with a drinking fountain being blown to smithereens – next the statue of a local worthy loses his head, and the following week a giant glass eye is exploded. Born in 1920, dying in 1983, Watson wrote twelve Flaxborough novels in total, renowned for their dry comic styling, set in the small fictional town of Flaxborough, widely believed to be based on Boston in Lincolnshire. Watson worked as a journalist in the area and the characters in his books are rumoured to be caricatures of people he met during his journalistic time.</p> <p>There are two main people in the novels - Inspector Walter Purbight, a solid, good old English chap type bloke who is a decent, if not slightly dull, fictional police detective. The other is Miss Lucilla Edith Cavell Teatime, the sometimes ladylike, sometimes gloriously vulgar, conwoman with a liking for dominoes, whisky and the finer things in life.</p> <p>These two are less of a pairing and more of a coincidence when it comes to Flaxborough daily life, but each, in their own way, add a glorious sense of very British-ness to what's a quintessentially British, slightly batty, ever so mildly sexist (remembering the timing of the writing) series of novels that I return to time and time again to kickstart my brain into a love of reading when I've lost the plot.</p> <p>COFFIN, SCARCELY USED is the opening salvo of the series, written in 1958, introducing in a perfect, low key manner, Inspector Walter Purbright, who finds himself investigating a most unexpected crime spree in the quiet, respectable little town of Flaxborough, particularly as the spree is amongst it's leading citizens. Starting out with the supposed natural death of esteemed councillor Harold Carobleat, followed by the distinctly odd electrocution of newspaper owner Marcus Gwill, a very unlikely scenario of illegal goings on starts to reveal itself.</p> <p>Remember, when you're reading these novels, that this was written in 1958, so there are some mildly sexist stereotypes with most of the women either devious or hysterical, but it is fortunately, on the mild side, played mostly for humour rather than as a blatant put down. Having said that, the stuffed shirt men don't always come off much better and the digs at the "commercial classes" are there if you look closely as well.</p> <p>The humour, and the sense of caricature is the vital part of these novels, although the plots themselves are well developed, with plenty of red herrings, and more than enough intrigue to keep the reader interested and guessing.</p> <p>As mentioned though, I have used this series for years now, after first discovering it in the mid 1970's, as a way of kickstarting a jaded reading brain. They are fun, they are more than a bit daft, but they are well crafted, endlessly entertaining and just the thing, particularly if you're a fan of the very best of British, slightly dotty, entertainment.</p> <p>The full series, in order is:</p> <p>Coffin, Scarcely Used (1958)<br /> Bump in the Night (1960)<br /> Hopjoy Was Here (1962)<br /> Lonelyheart 4122 (1967) (in which Miss Lucilla Teatime makes her first appearance)<br /> Charity Ends at Home (1968)<br /> The Flaxborough Crab (1969) - U.S: Just What the Doctor Ordered<br /> Broomsticks over Flaxborough (1972) - U.S: Kissing Covens<br /> The Naked Nuns (1975) - U.S: Six Nuns and a Shotgun<br /> One Man's Meat (1977) - U.S: It Shouldn't Happen to a Dog<br /> Blue Murder (1979) (Miss Teatime does not make an appearance in this one)<br /> Plaster Sinners (1980)<br /> Whatever's Been Going on at Mumblesby? (1982)</p> <p>It's also worth reading his study of interwar thrillers (if you can find a copy) Snobbery with Violence which Watson wrote in 1971.</p> <p> </p> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_15 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://www.austcrimefiction.org/review/coffin-scarcely-used-colin-watson" data-a2a-title="Coffin, Scarcely Used - Colin Watson"><a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.austcrimefiction.org%2Freview%2Fcoffin-scarcely-used-colin-watson&amp;title=Coffin%2C%20Scarcely%20Used%20-%20Colin%20Watson"></a><a class="a2a_button_facebook"></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"></a><a class="a2a_button_email"></a></span> </div> </div> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--17"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BOOK DETAILS</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-field-book field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><div data-history-node-id="14880" class="row bs-2col node node--type-books node--view-mode-blogged-books"> <div class="col-sm-6 bs-region bs-region--left"> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--15"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BOOK INFORMATION</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-field-book-cover field--type-image field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"> <a href="/book/coffin-scarcely-used" hreflang="en"><img src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/book-covers/coffin-scarcely-used.jpg?itok=4v5hJqtk" width="144" height="220" alt="Coffin, Scarcely Used" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </a> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Author</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/author/colin-watson" hreflang="en">Colin Watson</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-isbn field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">ISBN</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item">B079JHF82B</div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-year-of-publication field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Year of Publication</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14" hreflang="en">2018</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-series field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Series</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4365" hreflang="en">Flaxborough Chronicles</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-book-number-in-series- field--type-integer field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Book Number (in series)</div> <div class="field--item">1</div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="col-sm-6 bs-region bs-region--right"> <div class="form-item js-form-item form-wrapper js-form-wrapper panel panel-default" id="bootstrap-panel--16"> <div class="panel-heading"> <div class="panel-title">BLURB</div> </div> <div class="panel-body"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p><b data-skip="true">In the respectable seaside town of Flaxborough, the equally respectable councillor Harold Carobleat is laid to rest.
