NOW YOU SEE HIM - Eli Gottlieb

Nick Framingham and Rob had been friends since childhood, and even though it is six months since Rob's death, Nick simply cannot move on.  His marriage is crumbling, he's ineffective at work, he's falling apart and it doesn't seem that he really wants anybody to reach him.

There's obviously something deeply troubling Nick.  He searches for contact (seems to crave contact) with his first love - Rob's sister Belinda. Simultaneously he moves further and further away from his wife, who, it has to be said, at times is pushing him away as well.  He's in a mood to clear the decks obviously, but confronting his parents about some old sores doesn't make anything better.  Going back through his life, Rob's life, their shared childhoods, their families, their past - Nick is searching for something to give him some sense of peace with the world.

NOW YOU SEE HIM is a moving and involving book.  Whilst you follow Nick as he is struggling with something that is driving him in all the wrong directions, you feel for him so profoundly.  You also want to shake him until his teeth drop out.  As Lucy watches him fall apart, and take their marriage with him, there are times when you'd cheerfully strangle her.  As sad, as hurt as she is by Nick's withdrawal, the reader is torn again between profound sympathy and extreme frustration with her behaviour.  As the details around Rob and Kate's deaths are slowly revealed, Nick is caught - driving the story forward to a conclusion.  Why did Rob murder Kate?  Why did he kill himself?

NOW YOU SEE HIM is not a book for lovers of tidy or uplifting resolutions or even of characters that you can consistently feel some empathy with.  There are times that you just don't like any of them much, and yet, you can't stop wondering what happened, why Nick is putting himself through all this angst?

His name as Rob Castor.  Quite possibly, you've heard of him.  He became a minor cult celebrity in his mid-twenties for writing a book of darkly pitch-perfect stories set in a stupid sleepy upstate New York town.  Several years later, he murdered his writer-girlfriend and then committed suicide...

The deaths of Rob Castor and his girlfriend Kate Pierce are at the heart of an enthralling story of love, secrets, loyalty and fate.
