Born in 1954 in Toronto, Ontario, Margaret MacNabb moved to Australia in 1989. She began her career as a journalist at the Globe & Mail newspaper in 1982, becoming associate editor of its financial magazine, Report on Business, in 1986. She also worked in China as an associate editor of the Beijing Review. In Australia she worked for the Sydney Morning Herald as sub-editor, feature writer and bureau correspondent.
