Chief Inspector Van Veeteren is called in to help local Kaalbringen police find a possible serial killer after two seemingly unrelated and brutal killings. An ex-con and a real estate mogul are victims of separate deadly attacks with an ax. In his storied career, Van Veeteren has left only one case unsolved, but has never before faced an ax murderer. Details collected of the murders fail to link the two victims. Then there's another murder and soon after a promising female colleague of the Chief Inspector goes missing. Has she unknowingly gotten too close to their quarry?
