No one does television crime better than the Brits and there seems to be a goldmine coming up in 2009.  Here are just a few.  Hopefully they will all make it onto Australian television screens this year.

Sir David Jason to retire Inspector Frost in 2009.

There will be just 3 more Inspector Frost shows, scheduled to be screened in the UK in October, 2009 and then Inspector Frost will put on his jacket and scarf for the last time and leave Denton police station.  http://www.itv.com/Drama/copsandcrime/atouchoffrost/default.html(link is external)

ABOVE SUSPICION – a two part drama based on Lynda La Plante’s first Anna Travis book of the same name has recently aired in the U.K. to large viewing audiences.

BLUE MURDER starring Caroline Quentin as DCI Janine Lewis, single mum battling to juggle family and career will return  for a fifth series in 2009.  http://www.itv.com/Drama/copsandcrime/bluemurder/Abouttheshow/default.html(link is external)

Other  crime/detective shows on offer in the U.K. in 2009

COLD BLOOD -   starring John Hanna, Caroline Quirke and Jemma Redgrade

MIDSOMER MURDERS – John Nettles ha signed to play 15 more episodes of Midsomer Murders over the next two years. As well as that there was a Christmas episode in 2008.

A PLACE OF EXECUTION – based on the stand alone book by Val McDermid set in England in 1963 this will be a 3 part drama.

WIRE IN THE BLOOD – There was a 2008 Christmas episode with 2009 promising a series 6.

Now for Australia. While not as rich as the UK for crime shows, we are starting to get our share.

CARLA CAMETTI PD (SBS)

A smart, intriguing drama about a street-smart detective (Diana Glenn) who is grappling with a family full of gangsters and a relationship with the dashing Detective Luciano Gandolfi (Vince Colosimo).

UNDERBELLY 2 (Nine)

Underbelly: A Tale Of Two Cities will be set in the 1970s and 1980s, exploring the dope trade in NSW and the lives of two infamous drug lords - "Aussie Bob" Trimbole and Terry "Mr Asia" Clark. Same writers, same directors, new cast

Three Acts of Murder (ABC)

Telemovie  based on the case of a serial killer who copied a “perfect murder” he read about in a novel by Bony creator Arthur Upfield.

Rescue Squad (9)

Described as a “high octane drama” it will centre on the lives and loves of a Special Operations Rescue Squad. I guess someone at 9 was watching the ABC in the late 80s/early 90s.

As well as these new shows, returning in 2009 will be City Homicide, Rush and The Strip.
