Scheherazade, according to legend, protected herself from execution for a thousand and one nights by dint of superlative storytelling. Anthony O'Neill extends this ancient tale by relating an incident from the mid ninth century, twenty years after Scheherazade's stories had saved her life. She is kidnapped from the city of Baghdad. A prophecy sends a motley crew of sailors to her rescue, but as they venture deeper into the desert, losing all sense of direction, Scheherazade must once again spin a tale to stay alive.
