Asian Crime Fiction

Before anyone groans and ducks for cover - we all know that Top 10 lists depends on what second of the day that you pick your Top 10, but Catherine Sampson's list in The Guardian highlights some books that deserve mention - Top 10 or not!

Wander over for a look at the range of selections and see how many you can tick off - either in your MtTBR or that you have read. I chastened to admit I don't have any of Catherine's own books, but in her top 10 I'm slightly more relieved to note that some I've got and some I've even read!

Got but not read:

Death of a Red Heroine by Qiu Xiaolong
Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra
Out by Natsuo Kirino
All She Was Worth by Miyake Miyabe

Read:

Inspector Imanishi Investigates by Seicho Matsumoto
(I must admit I was surprised to not see Points & Lines mentioned which I thought was fabulous)
The Quiet American by Graham Greene
Jack the Ladykiller by HRF Keating (I'd forgotten all about this book - I wonder if this is one of the earlier versions of crime in Verse?)

But the absolute worst part about these lists is that I realise how many many many books there are that I haven't read yet and I can't for the life of me work out how I'm going to find the time to do this......

I was really happy to come across an audio interview between Colin Cotterill - author of the Dr Siri series - and Lars Schafft from Krimi over on Crimespace. It provides a lot of background to the books and Laotian life.

Coroner's Lunch, The

 ISBN 1-921145-18-8

Blurb from the Book

It's 1975 and Laos' new communist regime is having teething problems. Dr Siri Paiboun, a charming and crotchety retired surgeon is called back into harness as chief coroner, despite having no training for the post.

When the wife of a Party leader is wheeled into the morgue, eyebrows are raised. Then three more bodies are found - but these are Vietnamese soldiers, and Siri may have an international incident on his hands. Are the deaths linked?

The plucky septaugenarian steps out of party line and, with the help of old friends, his staff, Hmong shamans and dream visits from the dead, he goes digging for answers. Lucky for Siri the spirits are mostly on side.

Crime in Singapore

Strolling around the best of the blogs this weekend I came across this:

Crime in Singapore

"The notoriously crime-free island state of Singapore (equally notorious for executing or caning some of thse who do practice criminal trades there) is the setting for the first in a new series of "Asian Crime" fiction from a Singapore imprint, Heliconia."

More things to read people!

Private Eye From Sweden (via pulpetti) and Asian Crime (via EuroCrime)

Just when you thought it was safe to stick your head above the parapets and avoid even more fabulous suggestions along come two of my favourite blogs and you're back clutching the credit card and avoiding mutterings about MORE BOOKS!

Juri Nummetin from pulpetti has an interesting article that starts off with a comment about the lack of Private Eye novels in Finland and ends up noting two from Sweden. Darn - I hope these are translated!

Karen from EuroCrime, earlier in the week, mentioned a new crime series by Shamini Flint from Piatkus, with a central character DI Singh who has been labelled "the Asian Morse".

I feel an overwhelming urge to do just a quick little search on my favourite online buying websites...
