2007 Favourites #1

In, I hasten to add, absolutely no particular order I thought I might as well start on my favourites of 2007 - because there are a lot of them and this could take a while.

Starting off with a new Australian author, winner of the Best First Crime Novel at the 2007 Ned Kelly awards:

Diamond Dove by Adrian Hyland

I read this back in January 2007 and I knew then that I'd read one of my favourites for the year. Great / strong female voice with such amazing cultural awareness, this has got to be a mandatory book for anyone who wants to know something of the reality of outback Australian life. It's a journey book, with a crime. Whatever else you do - read this. It'll provide you with a significantly clearer view of Australia - the sensibilities and sensitivities of those outback communities. And it's laugh out loud funny in places - particularly if you have just ever so slightly an inkling of the real locations behind the fictional names.

A Thousand Mettle Folds - Cut I: The Fall

Blurb from the book

1888. Unstoppable, the killer searches for the perfect victim, using each corpse as a means to find the next. As the killer has done for years. For centuries...

CUT I: THE FALL How can you outrun death? How can you convince your hunters of your innocence? How can you run when the killer knows your every move? Your past...your present...your future. They've tracked the killer across continents and counties, trying to stop the death, the killing. Now the tracks lead to Blacktown, and somewhere in that town lies the killer's next victim, and the innocents...

The innocents who take the fall.

Ah, that old sailing classic has been done again.

STILL SUMMER by Jacquelyn Mitchard, done.

What was the last "peril at sea" novel I read? Probably SEA TRIAL by Frank de Felitta (1980 - he also wrote the classics AUDREY ROSE and THE ENTITY) - long time ago, but the idea of women at peril on the high seas has also been done before. Friendships undone, finding the inner strength and all that.

Another best-selling women's author has used this premise recently too - now who was it???

Review yet to come as I have just finished this one and I'm putting together my thoughts. It was an enjoyable read but the feeling is that opportunities for some truly delicious suspense were squandered terribly in the writing of this novel. Trying not to scare off the drama readers of the best-selling author, perhaps? Stay tuned!

Area 7

 ISBN 0-7329-1085-4

Blurb from the book

Returning to the battlefield once again is Captain Shane M Schofield, reprising his role as the rough-and-ready, smart-but-tough Marine specialist. Along side him are his follow survivors from the Ice Station incident, only this time, they're not under orders to go into harm's way.

Now, malice seeks them out in a bizarre twist of fate which results in the amazing struggle which is Area 7. With plot twists and action sequences to rival its predecessor, this stand-alone sequel to Ice Station puts Schofield back on familiar territory as he fights for the survival of the free world.

Locked deep underground in the other climatic extreme, Schofield must brave bizarre secret experiments and the perils of Lake Powell to rescue the President of the United States from those who seek to kill him. But there's a catch. There's always a catch.

Ill prepared and out numbered, Schofield has been given the short end of the stick - which is sure to make an entertaining read.

Black Man, Richard Morgan

Now I'm not saying I've never read Science Fiction - I've read quite a few of the "classics" but it's never been a genre that I've been dragged towards. Black Man has been sitting on "his" review pile for a while now but, you know how it is - some books just won't stop shouting at you. So I picked it up last weekend. It's a big undertaking at 546 pages but here I am - way outside my comfort zone again .... and loving it.

Follow the link below for the full review.
