Australian Crime Fiction Snapshot - Geoff McGeachin

1. The humorous spy novel is not a field that we see many books cover these days, yet the James Bond movies often tend towards the whimsical and are very popular. Is there a touch of James Bond in the acting Director-General of D.E.D, Alby Murdoch?

Alby is of course out of a job as acting DG after crossing the Defence Minister. He also wasn’t well suited for management as he realized after discovering that six months into the job he was already eight months behind in his paperwork. Unlike Mr. Bond Alby is just stumbling through, very much like the rest of us.

Currently Reading - D-E-D Dead!, Geoff McGeachin

First paragraph:

"I should have known it was going to be a lousy week when I dropped my gun in the tram on the way to the office. I guess I was a bit tired and edgy and concerned about being away from the action for so long. You miss being in the thick of things for the first few weeks and then you start wondering if you really miss it at all. Maybe I was getting too old for this spying lurk. What I really truly wanted was to be parked in a cane chair on a mountaintop somewhere in Bali, sipping a G and T and luxuriating in the serenity of a tropical paradise, instead of sitting like a gig on a Melbourne tram with my gun on the floor."

Currently Reading - Fat, Fifty & F***ed, Geoffrey McGeachin

Ted's around somewhere - not quite in a box but possibly hiding behind one, so no photo this time around, but after this weekend I really needed to pick up something that would be entertaining ... and fun ... and involving ... and fun .... and I think I did rather well with my selection (okay so I'm nearly finished) Fat, Fifty & F***ed by Geoffrey McGeachin. This is actually Geoff's first novel - from pre Alby days, although there are a few elements that ring a bell from the Alby books. Don't care - it's a hoot. It's funny. More in the upcoming review:

The blurb:

Martin Carter is having a crooki day. His home life's a misery, he's been retrenched by the bank and everyone's forgotten his birthday. But a million-dollar payroll, a pistol, and a split-second decision change everything.

The first line:

"A three-quarter moon sat low in the night sky, its pale glow illuminating the lumpy puddles of vomit dotting the deserted forecourt of Burrinjuruk's two-star Truck-on-Inn hotel/motel."

Currently Reading - Sensitive New Age Spy, Geoff McGeachin

This book snuck it's way into the letterbox yesterday and made it straight to the top of the reading pile. How could it not.... it opens:

"One sunny Sunday morning a few years back, I popped out early to get the papers and tumbled arse-over-tit over my neighbour's ugly mutt Dougal, who was snoozing happily on my doorstep. While there was minimal damage to all concerned it was a bit of a shock, so I knew exactly how the live-in caretaker on Fort Denison must have felt when he ambled outside to check the tide gauge early one holiday Monday in October and almost tripped over the 80,000-tonne, ocean-going bulk-transport tanker that someone had left tied up to his Hills Hoist during the night."

Blurb from the book

In D-E-D DEAD!, Geoffrey McGeachin's riotous new adventure thriller, Alby Murdoch - international photographer and Australian special agent - ducks bullets and bombs from Bondi to Bali and back as he attempts to unravel a a lethal web of high-level dodgy dealings... From the moment Alby drops his gun on a St Kilda tram he knows he's in for a bad day. Then his partner Harry is gunned down in a Double Bay coffee shop. By lunchtime Alby realises someone wants him dead - and they want him dead now. All Alby wants is some pasta, a good bottle of wine and to know more about the mysterious Grace Goodluck -- long dark hair, legs up to there, and piercing slate-grey eyes - sniper's eyes. But he also has to figure out who shot Harry and who wants him dead. And why. Unfortunately for Alby, the answer lies over the razor wire and past the anti-personnel mines protecting Bitter Springs, a top-secret US military facility deep in the central Australian desert. Now that can really ruin your day...
