I was really happy to come across an audio interview between Colin Cotterill - author of the Dr Siri series - and Lars Schafft from Krimi over on Crimespace. It provides a lot of background to the books and Laotian life.

It's 1975 and Laos' new communist regime is having teething problems. Dr Siri Paiboun, a charming and crotchety retired surgeon is called back into harness as chief coroner, despite having no training for the post.

When the wife of a Party leader is wheeled into the morgue, eyebrows are raised. Then three more bodies are found - but these are Vietnamese soldiers, and Siri may have an international incident on his hands. Are the deaths linked?

The plucky septaugenarian steps out of party line and, with the help of old friends, his staff, Hmong shamans and dream visits from the dead, he goes digging for answers. Lucky for Siri the spirits are mostly on side.

About the Author

Colin Cotterill is a cartoonist, illustrator and novelist. An Australian citizen, born in London, he has lived and been employed in various educational roles in Australia, Israel, the USA, Japan and Laos, before settling in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. For the last several years he has been involved with local nongovernmental agencies working to prevent child prostitution and rehabilitate abused children, and he recently set up the Books for Laos project, which raises money for the production of children's books.

Well Eurovision is over for another year - time to put away the Serbian cookbooks, dust off the Russian ones and start saving up for the caviar for next year's party. Now I can get back to concentrating on some reading - well once the slight hangover has gone away at least. I have actually been reading this book for a few days, just haven't had a chance to post anything on it yet. I have got to say with each book I love Dr Siri more and more. Sure the books have a healthy dose of woo wooⁱ, but Dr Siri is a Sharman in his native land and culture. And Mr Geung is a very strong character in this book as well - undertaking a massive journey because of duty. But more in the review to come.

"Dr Siri lay beneath the grimy mesh of the mosquito net watching the lizard's third attempt. Twice, the small grey creature had scurried up the wall and ventured out across the ceiling. On both occasions the unthinkable had happened. The animal had lost its grip and come plummeting down with a splat onto the bare concrete of the guesthouse floor. For a house lizard this is the equivalent of a man coming unstuck from the ground and falling up with a crash onto the ceiling Siri could see the stunned confusion on its little puckered face. It looked around to get its bearings then headed once more for the wall."
