Sophie Anderson is an Australian profiler working in the USA for the Behavioural Science unit with the FBI. She is also psychic, she sees through the eyes of the killer, and sometimes the victim, in her dreams. She is currently based in Washington DC and soon makes friends with fellow female investigator Sam who is the only person who knows Sophie's abilities. Sam is assigned a case of a serial killer who has murdered two women and soon makes it clear that he is after her. When Sam disappears the investigation team know they have between 3 and 5 days to catch the killer.

Sophie is assigned the case - along with her new love interest, Josh Marco. Together they and the other team members spread their hunt through several US States trying to track down the killer. Sophie try's frantically to use her talents - but she can't control them - and can't quite get the whole picture from them. She uses the investigation to hone her skills - can she get control of them to save Sam?

I really enjoyed BODY COUNT. It is different to the other mysteries because of the "woo woo" (paranormal) element. PD Martin also wrote from the killers perspective from time to time giving the reader another insight into the plot. I didn't suspect who it was until the same time as Sophie - in fact my main suspect was in another direction completely.

A well written page turner - there are two more in the series , THE MURDERS CLUB and FANMAIL. Book number 4 is with the publisher, with a contract for at least one more after that.

Blurb from the book

It all began in Brighton. Now there is a killer on the loose. Scotland Yard's brightest talent is chosen to head up the high-profile taskforce, a DCI who must confront his own past as the body count rises.

There are few leads and Jack Hawksworth can only fall back on instinct and decades-old cold cases for any clue to the killer's motive ... and identity.

With his most loyal team member threatening to betray him, a Chief Inspector pushing for results, a hungry British media clamouring for information, and a restless public eager for a conviction, the high-pressure operation can only end in a final shocking confrontation.

Cleaner, The

  ISBN 1741665663 / 9781741665666

Blurb from the book

Meet Joe. He's a nice guy out to catch a copycat killer. The one copying himself.

Suprising and compelling, this powerfully written novel is a terrifyingly vivid insight into the mind of a serial killer. Joe is in control of everything in his simple life, including both his day job at the police department and his 'night work'. He remembers to feed his fish twice a day and visit his mother at least once a week, although he occasionally peppers her coffee with rat poison.

He is not bothered by the reports of the Christchurch Carver, who, they say, murdered seven women. Joe knows the Carver has only killed six of these women. He knows that for a fact. And Joe is going to find that copycat killer, punish him for the one and then frame him for the other six.

Currently Reading: PRIMAL CUT (He Wants his Pound of Flesh ) - Ed O'Connor

“Common wisdom remembered brain paste. The old ladies of Silvertown would tell you. The porters at Smithfield market would tell you. No doctor would tell you, but what do they know?.”

With an opening paragraph like that you know you’re not reading a cozy set in a picturesque country village with a sweet little old lady figuring out who left the letter opener in the vicar’s back.

Bartholamew Garrod was desperate. His brother, Raymond was getting worse and the prescription pills were doing no good. Desperate times call for desperate measures . And after all, Bartholamew is a butcher who has the skill and knowledge to acquire brain paste

I'm close to half way through and zipping through this book at a rate of knotts. You have to have a pretty strong stomach to read this one. It's pretty grim and there are themes that would put a goodly number of readers off. Dog fighting for one. The rest I can leave to your imagination.

Blurb from the book

Working closely with the press, DI Clive Johnson tightens the net around a serial killer who is terrorizing the streets of East London, branding each victim with the sign of the cross to indicate another disciple has been claimed. In desperation, Johnson turns to an FBI criminal profiler for help.

El Dorado

  ISBN 978-0-3304-2304-5

Blurb from the Book

There is a serial child killer stalking the streets of Melbourne.

The victims are killed gently, lovingly, a gold mark traced on their forehead.

This killer doesn't hate children. This killer believes in childhood innocence at any cost.

Unflinching and morally uncompromising, El Dorado is the story of a friendship under siege, and the very long shadows that jealousy and betrayal can cast. It is both a complex thriller and a compelling reading experience from Australia's maverick and most versatile poet.
