Pulp Fiction Press - Small Australian Press looking for submissions from local authors

Pulp Fiction Press is an independent Australian publisher, with national distribution in Australia and New Zealand.

They are currently accepting submissions for crime and mystery, and speculative fiction - science fiction, fantasy and horror novels.

"As always, we’re keen to see new work, but at the moment, Pulp Fiction Press is only interested in submissions from Australian or New Zealand writers – although if there’s anyone out there from New Guinea or somewhere in the South Pacific, feel free to submit! We don’t necessarily only want stories set in Australasia, but we do want to present Antipodean voices to the world."

Where to Get Started with Australian Crime Fiction

We're often asked for recommendations on where to get started with Australian Crime Fiction or if I like X author, what other authors would be worth trying. Ages ago we put the attached list up and every now and again we go back and adjust / edit add.

If anybody has any other recommendations that they'd like to make please add some comments to the attached list. The more recommendations the better!

2007 Davitt Awards

The Local Sisters in Crime Chapter Davitt Awards have been announced for 2007.

The 2007 Winner for Best True Crime is Silent Death: The Killing of Julie Ramage by Karen Kissane

Best Adult Crime novel went to Undertow by Sydney Bauer

Best Young Adult Crime novel went to The Betrayal of Bindy MacKenzie by Jaclyn Moriarty

Sisters in Crime named the award The Davitt in honour of Ellen Davitt (1812-1879) who wrote Australia's first mystery novel, Force and Fraud in 1865. Her achievement is extraordinary when it is considered that Wilkes Collins' The Woman in White, generally regarded as the first full-length mystery novel, was published only in 1860. Force and Fraud was serialised in the Australian Journal, starting with its very first issue. It begins with a murder and ends with its solution, with red herrings, blackmail, and a dramatic court scene in between.

A Life Worth Mentioning

With little fanfare, some would say as little fanfare as he received in life, a report of the death of Eric Rolls appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald this week. Not a crime fiction author, but an Australian author whose most well known book is probably 1981's A Million Wild Acres, the story of the conquest and destruction of the Australian Wilderness. Another of his books "Citizens and Sojourners" has adorned the shelves in these parts for many years. He was 84 years old.
