On Thursday 6th October, there are some events being organised around the University of Melbourne and a research project: "Genre Worlds: Australian Popular Fiction in the Twenty-First Century", with some great crime, romance and fantasy writers speaking!

Well worth reserving a place if you are near enough to Melbourne to get there on a working day (especially as that most definitely doesn't include me), but would love to hear from anyone who does attend!

The first event is a symposium, “State of Play: Australian Popular Fiction in the Twenty-First Century”. There will be four panels discussing different dimensions of Australian popular fiction, from the role of genre communities, to new routes to market, to the realities of writing life for the commercial fiction author. Confirmed speakers include Candice Fox, Adrian McKinty, Angela Meyer, Angela Savage, Kylie Scott, Kat Mayo, Kate Cuthbert, Anne Gracie, Angela Slatter, Jack Dann, Rochelle Fernandez and Rjurik Davidson.

It runs from 10am – 4pm in the Gryphon Gallery, 1888 Building on Grattan St.

The second event is the traditional evening debate for the University of Melbourne’s Publishing and Communications program, which this year will have a popular fiction theme. The topic is “In the Battle of the Genres, Romance will Always Win” and the speakers include current students, as well as authors and editors. It will start at 6.30pm in Arts Hall, with drinks and nibbles provided.
