This workshop is suitable for all writers who want to understand how suspense works and how they can increase it in their work.  Suspense is the cornerstone of many a great story; it’s one of the key elements in crime and thriller texts, and an often overlooked aspect of storytelling at large. Well-crafted suspense keeps readers connected to a story and its characters, adds an emotional element to the reader’s experience, and informs the pace of a narrative. The Building Suspence into fiction workshop is designed to teach writers the basic techniques for developing suspense in their narratives.

The workshop will look at key techniques of initiating and then building suspense, including the role of characters, the importance of uncertainty, and the use of structure.
