Heaven

Heaven was written in 1994. I'd just finished Pack of Lies which was narrated by a woman who lies: it occurred to me that she might reveal at the end of the narrative that she wasn't even a woman. That doesn't happen, but it did start me thinking. The eponymous central character of Heaven is a transvestite, and flicks between different worlds: male / female, night / day, past / present. That's pretty much the story.

Mark Chamberlain is a man who has everything - a job he loves; the jail tattoos to prove it; a cop on his trail; and a houseful of stolen electrical goods. All he's missing is Caroline May, and she's been gone for twenty-five years. Nobody knows what happened to Caroline, though they still tell the stories. One afternoon her parents came home and she just wasn't there. They searched all of North Head, all of Auckland, looking for a blonde fourteen-year-old. They covered the city with posters; the cops drowned in paperwork. She was seen on the ferry, on a plane, with a stranger, on her own.

Shirker

Category:
Crime Fiction

"Shirker, Chad Taylor's first ever novel published in the UK, is a compelling and disturbing literary thriller set in downtown Auckland. Ellerslie Penrose is a man dealing in futures who becomes lost in the past.

Penrose's descent into the underworld is compulsive and chaotic - and the further he falls, the less he understands. But it is only through this descent that he can finally find what he is looking for.
Surreal and labyrinthine, Shirker's cool and enthralling prose establishes Chad Taylor as one of New Zealand's finest voices."

About the Author

Chad Taylor was born in New Zealand in November 1964. He grew up in Manurewa, South Auckland and read English and Art History while doing a Fine Arts degree at Auckland University's Elam School of Fine Arts. ("I wanted to do something creative and I wanted to find out how art worked. Also, all my favourite bands had gone to art school," he says.) While studying he wrote music and film reviews for Rip It Up magazine.
